This year we decided to involve our students in writing interesting observations and views for our readers and clients. Our students welcomed this opportunity and produced several articles and observations which we included in this issue of our gazette. We are sure that all our agents and students will find their contributions very interesting and useful as they provide insight into the students' life and experiences of English culture.

THE EXPERIENCE OF LIVING IN ANOTHER COUNTRY

First of all I would like to mention that I am from Mexico, one of the most gorgeous countries in America. So I am going to explain to you the big differences in weather, culture and food.

In Mexico you can find areas full of great natural beauty, warm weather, different types of food and the most romantic language; Spanish.

This is my first experience of living in another country, far from home. England is a country with a lot of history, rain, landscapes, wonderful museums, beautiful country-side and a extraordinary development of art. You can find places like The Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery where you can admire art, archaeology and ethnography. The National Gallery, the great Museum of Madame Tussaud's, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and The London Eye, only to mention a few places.

What I most appreciate about living in Worthing, is that you can enjoy studying with people of other nationalities and learn about their culture at the same time.  I have met people from Germany, Taiwan, Spain, Uruguay, Japan, Italy, France, Ecuador, Latvia, Hungary, Brazil, Thailand, The Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Turkey, Poland, Ukraine and Switzerland.

At first everything here seems odd, starting with getting used to seeing the cars driving on the other side of the road. Also, you have to get use to the English food, like fish and chips, which is very traditional.

I love the smell of England, which is a combination of breeze and nature. This experience is unique, not only because you start a new life, but also because you can travel around Europe. During this year I have been in Paris, the most romantic city in Europe and in Barcelona, this city smells like sea and in the night the smell is a perfect
combination of tomatoes with garlic. During the night you find a lot of places to have fun and the most friendly people in Spain. I hope I can continue travelling next year!

If you really want to improve your English, the only way is living in England. Come on! You will enjoy it!

(Dora Rodriguez Castro, Mexico, Upper-Intermediate Level)

Are you wondering which way to improve your English is best for you?

Well, I can recommend becoming an au pair in England. It is quite comfortable and an easy way of studying English.
You do not just improve your language skills but what is more you meet many interesting people and see many new places. Furthermore, you become more independent, as for many au pairs (including myself) it is the first experience of taking care of yourself without parents nearby and without their financial support.

So if you like children and are not afraid to try a different style of living, becoming an au pair is an ideal solution for you. Worthing is a middle sized town with the sea on one side and with a low hills on the other. It is 20 minutes from Brighton by train and around an hour by train from London. Many foreign students have chosen Worthing as the location of their English studies.

Discover Worthing Through Students' Eyes

You should definitely buy a travel guide about England before leaving home. Don't worry if you forget because as soon as you arrive, you can visit the tourist information office opposite St. George's.

If you want to learn English quickly and properly, you shouldn't socialise with people from just your country, but you should go out with other nationalities and English people if possible. As well as at school, you can meet people in pubs and clubs.

If you want to go clubbing, you should try the Liquid Lounge because it's the biggest disco in Worthing. On top of that, there are 4 dance floors and two of these are decorated in a 'fire and ice' theme. The 'ice' room downstairs is also a non-smoking area. The best day to go is Thursday as it's only £1.50 to get in and there is good hip hop and R 'n B music. Don't forget that clubs close at around 4am.

For a drink, you can go to a pub called The Assembly. Alternatively, you can try Tangerine which is on the seafront and where you can have a drink while you are looking at the sea. Cafe Nero or Sofa are good places to meet up with friends for a coffee.

In your free time, it is worth going for a walk on the Pier, a wooden platform which goes out to sea. Some people go for romantic dates on there, especially in the summer, whereas others prefer to do some fishing off the end of the Pier.

The beach front is a great place for walking, cycling or just sitting on a bench people-watching. In the summer you can go sunbathing and even swim in the sea, but always remember that the water is never completely warm!

You ought to take come cigarettes with you because a pack of 20 costs £5 here!

You need to take a waterproof coat with a hood because the wind is sometimes too strong to use an umbrella. Although it sometimes rains, it is worth bringing some sunglasses too because Worthing is located in one of the sunniest and driest places in England.

You should definitely go shopping in Worthing. At T.K. Maxx there are always lots of discounts on designer labels and you mustn't miss the street market in Montague Street every Wednesday!

There are two cinemas here. The Dome, which has been a cinema since 1910 and which is the oldest in England, is on the seafront. The Connaught is just around the corner from St. George's. The cinemas have lots of individual charm. For bigger screens, you can go to Brighton just a 20-minute bus ride away.

If you use a bus, you should get a monthly travel card which costs £37. Alternatively, you are allowed to buy a ticket on the bus and don't worry if you don't have the exact change because the driver will give you change.

If you want to work as an au-pair, you ought to get as much information as possible about your family by email or phone before you come here.

If you need a visa, you have to check the rules before you leave home. For example, with a student visa you are only allowed to work 20 hours per week.

For typical English food, you should try Macari's for fish and chips and pubs are the best place to taste other English dishes. When you are tired of English food, you can experience a Turkish night with belly dancing at the Istanbul restaurant or if you want Chinese food, you should definitely go to China Palace due to the fact that it is not only huge with great Chinese decor, but is also has really tasty food.
